Have some questions ?

Hey fans, haters, and normal human beings !

Lately, I've been getting a LOT of comments and MPs asking about the same usual things over and over (despite the FAQ on my Youtube channel), that's why I thought it would be more convenient to have all your questions answered here.

Instead of doing another FAQ here, I'll just write back in the comments.

101 comments:

  1. Hi, Songelereveur!

What's the software you use to record your covers?

    Lot of thanks!!

  2. How often do you practice? Also, do you have any advice for fellow musicians/gamers that would like to be as awesome as you?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I don't really practice anymore. I just play what I want to play, and that would be my main advice for anyone learning music:
    don't learn it !

Find which kind of music makes you want to play your instrument 8 hours in a row (in my case, it was VG music). Unless you want to become a professional, there's no point trying to play something you don't like. Once you've found what motivates you, you don't worry anymore about whether you're practicing enough or not.

    Salut,

  5. It seems you've been going in a more rock-oriented direction as of late, as opposed to your earlier covers that seemed more "folky" and "world-y." Is there a particular reason for this?

    ReplyDelete

@Elie and/or Jon: Well, back then, I used to try and experiment a lot of things. That made me use some instruments I had almost no experience on. Since my standards in term of quality have gone up, these folky tunes have become really hard to play, at least in a decent way. I'll probably keep doing them, though, as a side project, on another Youtube channel.

  7. have you ever considered putting your arangements up on itunes? or do you not have the legal clearance to do so?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Since I'm not owning the rights on the original tunes, I don't think I'm allowed to make money off my arrangements.

    ReplyDelete
  9. lulz dude how many guitar do u haz ?

    PS : ur awsum !

  14. First off, you're awesome bro. You have an amazing talent, and I always look forward to anything new you do.

Now my question is do you think you'll be adding a dl link to any of your covers? Not necessarily itunes lol

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you're talking about an mp3 download link, though I've always redirected everyone to a video to mp3 converting site, I'll be soon putting an link on every video made recently...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Do you have any kingdom hearts covers you plan to do any time soon?

    ReplyDelete
  17. to go along with shaina, id love to see a video of you playing your arrangement of destiny islands.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Shaina Yes, but not soon. I have at least two videos to do first. There is one particular song which is among my all-time favourite, from KH, that I tried to record twice already, and failed. I'll give it another shot someday...

@Andrew: I'm afraid that won't happen, I recorded Destiny Island very quickly because SilentPhil asked me to, but I'm not planning to make a video on this tune. ^^'

    ReplyDelete
  19. eh thats all right. i really only wanted it so i could see if i got the melody completely right. ive been working on it for a few weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey your really talented and i love all your covers. I was wondering whats your favorite instrument to play and how much did you spend in total collecting all the instruments that you own?

    ReplyDelete
  21. My favourite instrument to play is the bass, and then the guitar. I don't know how much I spent for all of my instruments, probably a lot, since I've been doing it for years...

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  24. First off, congratulations on your works, you're an amazing musician. I haven't played any Final Fantasy game other than FF7 but I do love all of your covers from those games, my favorites are the ones from Battletoads & Double Dragon. Thank you for such an amazing work :-).

P.S.: out of curiosity, are you from France or from Canada?? or maybe from some other French-speaking country??

    ReplyDelete
  25. hey, songelereveur. i recently made a facebook fan page for you and so far it hasn't seen much traffic. if you want to, would you mind putting a link to it in a vid description or something along that nature?

here is the link to it:

  27. oh, and if you have or are planning to make a personal facebook page, i can put you as an admin so you can make whatever announcements you want. only if you want to though.

  28. Mr. Le Reveur,

I'm a musician and would like to add the ocarina to my collection. I've read many guides around the internet, and listened to a lot of players to try and find one I most like the tone of. Of them, yours is one of my favorites; what is the manufacturer of your ocarina? do you know of anyone else who plays the same one and who may have uploaded video or audio?

    Thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You are an amazing musician! :)
My question: where do you find the drum lines and the other instruments' lines?

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Andrew: I'm not planning to have a FB page on my own for now, although I sometime check on yours.

@Matt: I have used like 4 different ocarinas over the past. Which specific video are you talking about ? :)

@Nantas: I don't have a method or something, I just try to recreate what I have in mind, with the instruments I own...^^

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey dude. i'm very curious, do you work or study?
do you earn money by playing or just play for pleasure? (sorry about the poor english)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I work as a guitar/bass/music theory teacher in a music school. I'd like to work as a composer, someday. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. "I work as a guitar/bass/music theory teacher in a music school."
if i ever travel to France, Im probably gonna want to sit in on one of your classes haha.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey you are extremely talented I was wondering if you have any original tracks or other music covers(other than video games)

Also do you plan on posting a zip file of all your covers at any point, I'd love to have them in my media library

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Charles: I will soon. I'll upload some stuff on another Youtube account.

I'm not planning on having a zip file of all my covers for a simple reason: I'm getting a very very small amount of money with the DL links I've posted on each of my videos, and with the ads on this blog. It's not much, but at least, it feels like I'm getting a little bit of remuneration for my work. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. What kind of ocarina do you use? o: (IE in your Marble Zone cover, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's a Maparam Double AC, if I remember well...

    ReplyDelete
  38. am i correct in saying that you dont take requests? just asking for the facebook fans.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm not taking them anymore, because I barely have time to spend on the videos I want to make... :/

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi SongeLeReveur, devoted fan speaking here. I have two questions:
1- Do you know the game Wild Arms? If so, are you planning to do any cover of its OST?
2- when playing your midi keyboard, what programs/plugins/libraries do you get your sounds from??

Keep the music going, you are really talented.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Sorry, the same Anonymous here (you can call me Dingo). I also wanted to know if you know Alundra, and also if you were planning to do a cover (sooo original I know).

    Best regard again!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey ! I know Wild Arms, I don't know Alundra. I'm not planning to do a cover from any of them.

About the plugins I'm using, they almost all from Logic Pro 9. I usually spend a lot of time creating the right synth sound.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ok, i know you probably get asked this about a million times, and you probably get tired of answering it, but do you have any idea when your next video will be?

    ReplyDelete
  44. man... music is awesome can't wait to hear the next one... ummm i know u said u posted mp3 download links for ur newer videos, how bout for some of the older ones... is there a way of getting recordings of them? i really like the megaman tracks (ones new and ones older) cant wait to go down the road listening to your incredible arrangements... i can put it with my collection of marc papeghin's music, like i said can't wait till the next one comes out...

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Anonymous: No idea. I had a lot on my hands, recently. Hopefully, it'll be out soon.

@mitchell: You can use any site that extracts audio from streaming videos. For example: http://www.vidtomp3.com/

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey,

awesome music man. You talked about generating a small income from your videos.

A lot of very active youtubers nowadays have a paypal account up for donations. Since you can't really sell your music (copyright stuff...) this could be a way for us fans to show our appreciation and chip in e.g. for some reserve bass or guitar strings. I would be totally prepared to make a donation for you to keep up this awesomeness.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I would like to start by saying I am a fan of your works on youtube and as a subscriber I thank you. after reading the comment above I understand that your busy and requests may not be that convenient for you, but at the very least I would like for you to listen to the opening theme song to the anime called Trigun. here is the link to the best version IMO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzHe4U5c5Oc

    ReplyDelete
  48. @Mjelt : Thanks, but I'm not planning on asking for donations, for now. I'd rather record an album (with original tunes), and give something back to my fans. This way, they could support what I do and I wouldn't have any copyright problem. I'm currently thinking on what could be on this album. About the income thing I mentionned, I'm legally not supposed to talk about it, although if you ever runned a site, you know what it's all about. :P

Thanks for your kind words !

@LtMooch I know this theme (from waaay back, when I was in high school), but these kind of tunes are already arranged and great on their own. There wouldn't really be a point for me to cover them...^^

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi. Love your videos but I especially like your mixes considering your equipment, could you tell me how you learnt to mix?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  50. With my ears, and a lot of time and experiments...

    ReplyDelete
  51. salut songe!

    ReplyDelete
  53. What software do you use besides logic? What VSTs? And Plug-Ins for mixing and stuff?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just so you know, your Super Mario Bros 2 - Overworld tab download is extremely faulty, or at least the guitarpro version is.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I use Final Cut to edit my videos, and I think that's it. The only VST I use is a vinylizer (I don't remember its name). Every other plugins are from Logic Pro 9.

@Andrew: I'm just putting these tabs up because I get so many requests about it, I don't really check if they're accurate or not. Frankly, I don't care. :D

    ReplyDelete

  60. Very nice dude!

have you studied music at a conservatory or university, or you just learned everything by yourself?

    See ya.

  62. I'm a fan of your work and I just want to ask what kind of mic do you use to record and what is the name of recorder/flute thing you use in the Links Awakening cover?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I usually use an AT2020 USB. My recorder is an alto one, from Moeck.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Got any updates i can tell to your facebook fans?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Also could you make a list of all of your instrument models?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Sorry, I'm not planning on making a list of every instrument I own. If you want to know which one I'm using in a video, just ask in the comments. :)

    ReplyDelete

@Anonymous: FF7 would be my favourite (along with FF10, but I don't tell this, because people throw stuff at me).

    ReplyDelete
  74. I ran across your videos while searching for Battletoads music. I was a Subscriber after watching 2 videos; I love your work!

Do you accept suggestions/requests? I've always loved the song from Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on Stage 2, called the "Hollow Tree." Would you consider doing a cover of that song? And if you have and I'm not finding it, could you link me to it? :)

    Keep rockin'! :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Have you ever considered doing anything from the Donkey Kong fanchise?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Any chance we'll be seeing more final fantasy VIII in the future?

I thought the soundtrack to that game was sublime.

    ReplyDelete
  77. hey dude!!!

As a musician and a gamer myself I can say you rock!!!

Im from the Philippines and I have always been addicted to the BGMs of Castlevania and rockman series.

Its just bad that in all the bands ive been with, no one seems to would like to cover a video game them for and instrumental part of the regular set or gig. Ive been trying to push bloody tears but i guess when you play these kind of music you have to have the heart because you played the game...wholeheartedly.

I admire your work and salute you and if its not asking too much do you have audio formats of your covers from castlevania and rockman? could you share your work for my personal reference but if its ok but if you copyrighted them or something it's alright.

ill just browse buy your blog and see you response. again dude you rock!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Scott: Yes.

@Anonymous: You can use any video-to-audio conversion site to get the mp3s from my videos.

    ReplyDelete
  79. What's your advice to someone who wants to try doing covers to songs?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Listen to the original a lot. Take your time planning how you want to make it sound. Don't make it too difficult: it's better to play nicely something easy than record a piece that is too hard. Also : have fun !

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey there,

Just wanted to run two things by you.

First, I'm glad you're a Final Fantasy VII fan — hearing you masterfully recreate those songs brings back some great memories. That being said... your sound has obviously matured over the years: is there any song you haven't worked on yet that you've wanted? Or is there any song that you've already covered that you've considered doing again, since you have more instruments, technology, etc.?

And secondly, I just wanted to give my thanks — you're certainly going places with your talent. I've been watching your performances since you covered "Gold Saucer," and listening to what you've accomplished has given me chills. Coming from one video game fan to another, it's nice to find someone who is not only passionate about the genre's music, but is able to back it up with an incredible sound. The feel you've put into your pieces truly hits me — you put a lot of heart into your work, which is a rare find nowadays. Best wishes to you, wherever you may go with your talent.

    Dream on, dreamer.

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Eric:

Hey ! Thanks for all your kind words !

There are, obviously, songs that I want to cover (some of them has been in my mind for a long time). I won't tell which ones, though. I also might redo some of my old tunes, like Vamo' Alla Flamenco.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hey, I wanted to know your process for recording the pieces, do you start with bass, drums, guitars? which one?

    Thanks, you rock :D

    ReplyDelete
  84. Usually, the drums. Sometime, the bass. It depends...

    ReplyDelete
  87. It's a Hohner melodica. The ocarina you're refering to is a Hind, not sure which one exactly.

  90. I downloaded all of your videos and I play them almost on a daily basis during my leisure hours as I find your music very relaxing.

You're not an amateur. You're a professional. You should be getting paid for this line of work and I am very distraught that all I could do is click your ads relentlessly. We are truly blessed to have a musician such as you grace us with your music for nothing in return but a few simple ad clicks. You ARE the man. To hell with the haters. The only reason they're hating on you is pure jealousy. They cannot comprehend the fact that they got served by a REAL musician.

    My good man.

Keep. On. ROCKING! I love you dude. No homo.
